PHOTOS: Pop the kite, bury the bow, and crash big

Photographer Bernie Kaaks was at the right place at the right time for this sequence. Here is his story:

“Here’s a set of 10 images of a huge broach that happened just before the first race of the semi finals of the Schweppes Little Wheel match racing regatta at the South of Perth Yacht Club on the Canning River. The skipper was World Laser Radial champion and accomplished match racer, Tristan Brown.

“The crew sailed to windward to settle down before their first semi final race, popped up a kite to return to the starting area and buried the bow. They destroyed the job and spilled a couple of crew into the river, but re-grouped to win their semi two-nil and will compete in the final this afternoon.”
