Cat Island decision leaves monohull sailors hissing

Published on April 1st, 2014

(April 1, 2014) – In an attempt to cash in on the growing popularity of cruising catamarans, Cat Island in the Bahamas has decided to become a “Cat-Only” Clearance Port. Beginning April 15, monohulls will have to choose to do their clearance at one of the thirty-four other official Bahamian Ports of Entry.

In addition to the special entry privileges, each arriving catamaran will be given a “Kitty Bag” that includes a bottle of Calico Jack Rum and a Cat Island courtesy flag as a welcome gift.

Monohull sailors have reacted poorly to the decision by the Government of the Bahamas Customs Department to exclude them from entering at Cat Island.

“What’s next, catamaran only anchorages? And really, shouldn’t they be paying double the cruising permit fees for having two hulls,” questioned angry monohull owner, Felix Wannacat. “It’s the end of Bahamas cruising as we know it.”

Multihull owners appear thrilled with the new ruling, noting that it’s time cats were treated with a bit more respect.
