College Sailing Chalk Talk: End of the Season and Brown

Published on May 6th, 2015

Chris Love provides this update on the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association 2014-2015 season along with his weekly Chalk Talk video report:

This week in college sailing was the last for many teams around the country. With conference championships wrapping up this past weekend, the only major racing left on the schedule is at the ICSA Spring National Championships, May 25-June 4 in Newport, RI.

On the Pacific Coast, Stanford had a nearly perfect long weekend at home, winning both divisions at the PCCSC Coed Champs Friday-Saturday and going undefeated in the Team Race Championship on Sunday at the conference’s combined event. UCSB was runner up in both events, locking in their spot for all three Nationals disciplines. USC and Hawaii also qualified for Coeds.

Western Washington and University of British Columbia qualified at the NWICSA Coed Champs. UBC is the lone Canadian team qualifying for this year’s event, edging out Oregon State by just one point, and followed by Oregon just a point behind them.

MCSA only had five attendees at their women’s championship, all but one qualifying for the Women’s Nationals: Wisconsin, Minnesota, UW Milwaukee, and University of Iowa.

SAISA pushed five teams through to Coed Champs in their one-day championship: College of Charleston, USF, Eckerd, Florida, and Jacksonville.

Salve Regina gave teams in NEISA a taste of Newport sailing at their Coed Champs for the Coast Guard Alumni Bowl. Brown got their first major coed win of the season, followed by Coast Guard, Yale, Boston College, Bowdoin, Harvard, Roger Williams, and Tufts.

The largest coed conference statistically is MAISA, and their Coed Championship for the America Trophy awarded Nationals berths to the top nine teams. They are, in finishing order: Georgetown, Old Dominion, SUNY Maritime, St. Mary’s, Fordham, Merchant Marine Academy Kings Point, U.S. Naval Academy, University of Pennsylvania, and Hobart William Smith.
