Enright is honored with Hugh Kilmer Trophy

Published on May 12th, 2015

Newport, RI (May 12, 2015)- Monday afternoon Charlie Enright received the 2014 Hugh Kilmer Trophy from the Storm Trysail Club at the New York Yacht Club, Harbour Court. Commodore Lee Reichert presented the award for outstanding seamanship for their role in the rescue of the Team Vestas crew last November during Leg 2 from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi. The Alvimedica crew stood-by for approximately 9 hours when Team Vestas was grounded on a reef in the Indian Ocean. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session with Charlie and navigator Will Oxley.

The Hugh Kilmer Trophy was given in Mr. Kilmer’s memory to the Storm Trysail Club by his shipmates and friends who appreciated his great love of the sea and of the club, which he so ably helped to revitalize after the Second World War.

Charles Enright has been a member in good standing of the Storm Trysail Club since 2011. He has distinguished himself on and off the water. As Captain of Team Alvimedica in the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race, Charlie has lead his crew with due caution and strong performance.

On the night of November 29, 2014, Team Vestas Wind was grounded on a reef with significant damage to the vessel. As Alvimedica was the nearest vessel, Charlie and his crew went to the aid of the stricken vessel. They stood by in safe water about 2 miles away, providing communications support until the rescue of the Team Vestas Wind crew was assured, and then resumed racing.
