Lancelin Ocean Classic to attempt new world record

Published on May 26th, 2015

The world famous Lancelin Ocean Classic windsurfing and kitesurfing race will be held January 14-17, 2016 in Lancelin, Western Australia. The four-day event will bring together windsurfing and kitesurfing athletes from all over the world who will fight to win the 25km marathon from Ledge Point to Lancelin.

This is the 31st time the race has been run since 1986, which has held the Guinness World Record for the Longest windsurfing race since 2008.

For the 2016 event the wave competitions will be as high-octane as ever for both disciplines. On Saturday, windsurfing and kitesurfing 25km marathons will both complete the same course, with Sunday as a reserve day. This is the first year in the long history of the event that the windsurfers and kitesurfers will be competing on the same course, following growing demand from athletes. This exciting development will ensure the Saturday evening athletes trophy presentation night is one not to be missed.

In 2016, Lancelin Ocean Classic will be attempting to break the world record for the longest open ocean kitesurfing race.

Multiple world title holder and winner of the 2015 Lancelin Ocean Classic Steve Allen will be returning to compete in 2016, “Knowing the calibre of athletes already planning on attending the next Classic, I am really excited to be among them” he said, “This is such an important race for the windsurfing community and we all look forward to it every year”.

The popular wave sailing competitions will also be back for the two disciplines, alongside stand up paddle-boarding and jet ski events. Last year two local West Australian athletes beat visiting entrants to take home the kitesurfing wave (Dale Stanton) and windsurfing wave (Jaeger Stone) competitions.
