Outright Transpac Record Remains Safe

(June 25, 2015) – The attempt by the 60-foot foiling trimaran L’Hydroptère to beat the transpacific speed record from Los Angeles to Honolulu, Hawaii is over. After 72 hours of sailing, the team still has 1300 nm remaining, requiring an average speed of over 30 knots to beat the record.

The team reports wind conditions have been less than expected, and they now anticipate arriving in Honolulu by Sunday or early Monday. They would have needed to reach Honolulu by 09:58:39 PDT on Saturday, June 27 to break the record.

The start time for L’Hydroptère was June 22 at 21:27:02 UTC (14:27:02 PDT) from the official point at the Point Fermin Lighted Whistle Buoy 6PF. The team is led by Alain Thébault (FRA) and Jacques Vincent (FRA), who are joined by four American crew members.

The outright record for the 2215nm distance is 04:19:31:37, set by skipper Olivier de Kersauson (FRA) and crew on the 110-foot trimaran Geronimo in November 2005.
