Home team leads Junior Match Racing Championship

Corona del Mar, CA (July 21, 2015) – The 49th Annual Governor’s Cup International Junior Match Racing Championship got underway today for the 12 teams selected to compete for the title on July 21-25. The team of event host Balboa Yacht Club with skipper Christophe Killian, which finished third in 2014, leads the field after going a perfect 5-0.

Racing began about noon in the Pacific Ocean off Newport Beach, California. The skies were overcast with temperatures about 80 degrees, and light winds building from 5 to 9 knots.

The event format includes one round robin, with the top 8 teams advancing to the Quarter Final stage. Five of the 11 races were completed today, with four teams tied for second with a 4-1 record

Six international teams from Australia, England, New Caledonia, and New Zealand are facing six USA teams from California and Illinois, squaring off in the purpose built Governor’s Cup 21’s, designed by BYC Staff Commodore Alan Andrews of Andrews Yachts.
