New Los Angeles to Honolulu outright record confirmed

Published on July 22nd, 2015

The World Sailing Speed Record Council has ratified a new Los Angeles to Honolulu outright record. Co-skippers Renaud Laplanche (FRA) and Ryan Breymaier (USA) and crew sailed the 105-foot trimaran Lending Club 2 on July 15-19 to an elapsed time of 3 days 18 hours and 9 seconds, averaging 24.61 knots over the 2215 nm distance. The previous record of 04:19:31:37 was set in November 2005 by Olivier de Kersauson (FRA) and crew on the 110-foot trimaran Geronimo.

Lending Club 2 had entered the biennial Transpac Race 2015 in hopes of setting a new race record and outright record, but when the forecast was deteriorating for their July 18 start, the team left on July 15 to take advantage of the superior weather window and go for the outright record alone. Notice in the video the three staggered start days of the 2015 Transpac Race on July 13, 16, and 18.
