Trevor Moore lives on through Coast Guard Foundation gift

Stonington, CT (August 19, 2015) – The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and welfare of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced today it has received a $40,000 gift from the Trevor Moore Search and Rescue Fund. The donation will be made to the Fallen Heroes Fund in Trevor’s name.

A U.S. Olympic sailor and competitor at the 2012 London Games, Trevor Moore was last seen on Thursday, June 25th on a small motorboat in Biscayne Bay off of Miami. Coast Guard search and rescue teams covered over 510 square nautical miles before announcing on Saturday, June 27th the suspension of their efforts. The official search was conducted by the United States Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, City of Miami Police Department, the National Park Service and Miami Dade County Fire Rescue, as well as dozens of local volunteers.

The Trevor Moore Search and Rescue Fund was launched by a group of US Olympic Sailing Team athletes and staff through a GoFundMe.com crowdfunding campaign and was created to provide financial support for the group of civilian volunteers who gave their time, skills, boats and resources in order to find one of America’s best sailors.

The first donation to the fund came from the US Sailing Team Sperry, the national sailing team, and was quickly followed by contributions from over 500 individuals, families and groups. In consultation with Trevor’s family and friends, and after the suspension of the search effort, the fund’s organizers donated the funds not used in the search effort to the Coast Guard Foundation.

“The Moore family is glad that excess resources from the Trevor Moore Search and Rescue Fund will be used to help the families of those who have sacrificed everything to rescue sailors in danger,” said John Moore, Trevor’s father. “The U.S. Coast Guard went above and beyond in attempting to help Trevor, and we are grateful for everything they did during the search.”

“We send our deepest condolences to Trevor’s family and friends; his loss will be felt by so many,” said Anne Brengle, president, Coast Guard Foundation. “We thank the organizers for their donation and will contribute it to our Fallen Heroes Fund. Through their generosity, we will honor Trevor’s memory by supporting the families of Coast Guard members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.”

“Trevor was a leader on the 2012 US Olympic Sailing Team, and he had the respect of everyone involved,” said Debbie Capozzi, a 2008 and 2012 Olympian who co-founded the Trevor Moore Search and Rescue Fund along with former US Olympic Sailing Committee Chairman Dean Brenner and Olympic Team staff member Will Ricketson. “The huge volunteer search that took place in Miami was a testament to the kind of person Trevor was, and how much his friends cared about him. We started this fund to assist with the search, and also to give people far away, who were feeling helpless, a way to help find Trevor. The extra money we were able to raise will now go to a really worthy cause in the Fallen Heroes Fund.”

“Trevor has always been known for his humble, selfless nature and genuine desire to help others,” said Libby Patton, Trevor’s fiancée. “It’s fitting that the money donated to assist with his rescue be given to others in need of support through the Fallen Heroes Fund.”

The Fallen Heroes Fund provides emergency assistance and helps pay for the immediate and ongoing needs of families of those Coast Guard heroes who die or are critically injured while on active duty in service of our country. The Foundation hosts memorial services, provides for travel for family and crewmembers attending services, and assists the Coast Guard with support to the families so they can attend the services or be near an injured family member.

A part of the Fallen Heroes Fund – the Fallen Heroes Scholarship Program – provides scholarships to support the children of Coast Guard Fallen Heroes. This school year, the Foundation has supported three children of Coast Guard members who will have the entirety of their education funded through the generous donation of its supporters.
