Sail A Dirtboat Day

Since the invention of bicycles, kids have raised their jackets above their heads as a sail and dreamed of wind powered wheeled racers. Progress has now refined landsailing to harness the wind and skim along at 30+ knots without hiking hard, getting wet, or having to jump on a centerboard in an attempt to right a capsize.

To experience sailing on the hard, there is organized Sail a Dirtboat Day on Saturday, March 19, from 1200 to 1700, at Ivanpah Dry Lake, 40 minutes south of Las Vegas, off I-15 at Primm, Nevada.

This will be a beginners Landsailing clinic. There will be dirtboats available for free lessons. All of this is of course dependent on the wind. All ages are welcome. You must wear a helmet and sign a waiver to sail.

To get to the site, exit I-15 at Primm and go east under the freeway. Take the loop road to the east gate past the lottery store, and enter Ivanpah Dry Lake. Drive about 2 miles along the southeast shore to the big tent. Ask for Mary Robertson, President of the North American Land Sailing Association (NALSA).

The clinic will be held alongside America’s premier landsailing event, the America’s Landsailing Cup on March 19-26.
