Newport Harbor and Larchmont tied at Baldwin Cup

Newport Beach, CA (April 9, 2016) – Day two of the Baldwin Cup Team Race, sponsored by JPMorgan Chase, saw the debut of the first annual rough and tumble Bocce Tournament along with sailing conditions competitors called, “nasty for Newport.” In a day that saw mist, heavy rain and varying winds from seven to 13 knots, the intensity of the races increased, as reflected in the flamboyant language coming from the race course.

Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s Team Thunder and Larchmont Yacht Club are tied for first with Larchmont Yacht Club in third. Bocce Ball and Chain won the competitive Bocce Tournament with creative moves worthy of the MVP awards. The first round robin has been completed and the top six teams are designated for the gold fleet and the bottom six are in the silver fleet.

“Throughout the day, which saw close to 400 spectators despite the wet weather, our announcers shared snippets of wisdom for racers such as: “no pain, no gain”; “you have to be cruel to be kind in team racing; and paying tribute to the new sporting event; “the real heroes were the Bocce players that braved the downpours,” noted event chairman and Newport Harbor Yacht Club Staff Commodore Bill Crispin.

“Throughout the 55 races completed today, competition was extremely close, often times with races not being decided until the last 50 yards,” said Adam Dearmont, veteran of the Baldwin Cup Team Race and member of the jocular announcing team.

Bocce teams included Bocce Ball and Chain, Deboccery, Pretty Pink Princesses, Razzle Dazzle, Shake ‘N Bake, Team Stars and Strips, The Dirt Bags, and The Rowdy Oldsters. The application process for the 2017 team has already begun; interested parties may apply at baldwincup.com/hazardbocceonanunevenfloatingdock. In their continued attempt to make every corner of the earth their own, the Brits brought out the cricket bat and reimagined the green as a pitch with chairs as wickets.

This year’s participants include: Balboa Yacht Club (Corona del Mar, Calif.), Itchenor Sailing Club, (West Itchenor, United Kingdom), Larchmont Yacht Club (Larchmont, New York), New York Yacht Club (New York, New York), the St. Francis Yacht Club (San Francisco), Seattle Yacht Club (Seattle), San Diego Yacht Club (San Diego) Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club (Oyster Bay, New York), Southern Yacht Club (New Orleans), and the Yale Corinthian Yacht Club (New Haven, Conn.). In addition to Newport Harbor Team Thunder, the defending champion, NHYC Lightning will be the second home club team.
