Variety is the Spice of Life

The windward leeward race course may be the perfect configuration for one design championships, but the better solution for rating rule racing – particularly in the Caribbean – is to leverage the local landscape with point to point racing, a format that Les Voiles de St. Barth has becoming masterful at.

“Les Voiles is very interesting because instead of being windward-leeward courses it’s around the rocks racing,” remarks Puerto Rican Sergio Sagramoso, who is racing his Melges 32 Lazy Dog. “St Barth is unique in that it has so many outlying natural islands. You can set up a really nice course using these islands…no matter what the wind conditions. So I find the courses amazing, (there are in fact over 20 possible courses the race committee can choose from) and so varied.”
