Justin Callahan Dominates Optimist Team Trials

Published on April 22nd, 2016

Twelve year old Justin Callahan dominated the Optimist US Team Trials, held April 19-22 in San Francisco, CA. The famous Berkeley Circle, with its characteristic 15 to 25 knot winds, did not disappoint the 230 pre-qualified Optimist youth competitors (ages 9-15) from all over the country for the championship event over four days.

The Team Trials regatta is the most prestigious event on the Optimist class calendar, ranking the sailors who will represent the USA at the World, European, North American Championships the summer.

Callahan (Florida/Rhode Island) blitzed the fleet, winning 7 of 12 races. Finishing second through fifth was Zane Rogers (Texas) Thomas Hall (Pennsylvania) Sam Bruce (Maryland) and Bella Casaretto (Florida) to round out this year’s USA World Team.
