IMOCA 60 Class Coming to Manhattan

Published on May 15th, 2016

Seventeen solo skippers have entered the NY-Vendee Race, a 3100 mile course from New York (USA) to Les Sables d’Olonne (FRA) in the IMOCA 60 monohull class. Starting on May 29, the fleet will gather before the start beginning May 22 at North Cove Marina in Manhattan.

For some skippers, this is the last opportunity to qualify for the Super Bowl of their sport — The Vendee Globe. For others, this is their final dress rehearsal to prepare for this solo, non-stop, round the world race just 6 months away.

There will be the “repeat-offenders” — French sailors who have dominated the sport and have more ocean miles under their keels than one can keep count of! There will also be first-timers, sailors who have never crossed an ocean alone, but dream to one day (soon) do it around the world.

And, of course, there are the crowd favorites, like Alex Thompson – Hugo Boss, who have reached beyond sailors through their brilliant stunt trilogy to inspire and engage adventure fans around the world. “I am incredibly confident that we have built a racing yacht capable of winning the Vendée Globe,” said Thompson.
