Eight Bells: Mark Rastello

Published on May 18th, 2016

Mark Gerard Rastello passed away May 17 at 11:47 am at the age of 59 (1956-2016) in Newport Beach, CA. Mark had a storied past as a champion sailor, winning most of the sought after goals available in California and beyond.

Mark was the 1973 Naples Sabot Junior Champion, the 1974 Governor’s Cup Champion, a two-time All-American for UCLA in 1977 and 1978, winning the College Coed Nationals for UCLA in 1978. Mark went on to be a successful 470 skipper, match racer and offshore sailor. He was a fierce competitor and teammate on the water, and a friend to all off the water. He played the game right and was respected for it.

On April 30th, the physicians informed Mark that he had only a few weeks to live as he was succumbing to Leukemia. Mark accumulated more friends than championships over the years which became obvious during this period with the incredible outpouring of visits to the hospital and hospice, phone calls, texts and emails from his family and friends from the sailing community.

As Mark approached the finish line, he shared how all he wanted in life was to have fun, and that people need to do as much as they can while they can. But to his credit and consistent with his personality, he also instructed that he wants his ashes shot out of a cannon. Plans are now underway.

“If you sailed or spent time with Mark, say a prayer for him,” requests Mark’s brother, Doug Rastello. “Hug your loved ones, go on that trip or vacation or adventure you have been talking about as Mark said, ‘While you can’. Also, if you have any stories about Mark, please share with Scuttlebutt.”

A celebration of Mark’s life, with cannon firing, will occur sometime mid-June in Newport Beach, CA. All friends are welcome for a roaring remembrance of his life.

Sail on “Rat”, we will miss you but never forget you.
