US Teams Selected for Red Bull Foiling Generation

Fifteen talented youth teams from across the country have been chosen to participate in the first ever US Qualifier for the Red Bull Foiling Generation sailing competition. The US Qualifier will be held October 15 and 16 at the Sail Newport Sailing Center in Newport, Rhode Island.

Red Bull Foiling Generation US Qualifier competitors, aged 16 to 20, were chosen through an application process that was launched earlier this year. Industry experts in partnership with US Sailing were recruited to evaluate possible competitors based on their sharp sailing skills, athleticism and smart decision-making.

These skills are needed to handle the 18-foot Flying Phantom catamarans designed with hydrofoil technology, a smaller but similar version to what is used in the world’s most famous sailing competition – America’s Cup.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity to give some of our best young athletes their first taste of racing on foils, which are quickly becoming a huge part of the high-performance side of our sport around the world,” said Leandro Spina, US Sailing’s Olympic development director.

Arriving early in the week, all pre-selected teams will be trained on how to effectively and safely operate these unique and fascinating sailboats by the event’s founders, two-time Olympic gold medalists Austrians Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher.

The winning team will stay in Newport to race in the Red Bull Foiling Generation World Final on October 22 and 23, joining top youth competitors from 14 countries – Switzerland, Spain, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Italy, Turkey, France, Denmark, Netherlands, Great Britain, New Zealand, Japan and Belgium – that have qualified for this first ever world-wide competition.
