Published on September 16th, 2016

The World Sailing Speed Record Council has ratified the establishment of a new world record set by the yacht MOD70 Phaedo 3. The record is the Around Ireland, Outright Record.

Sailed by Lloyd Thornburg (USA), Brian Thompson (GBR) and 6 crew on August 3-5, 2016, the Phaedo team completed the 698 nm course in 36 hours 52 minutes and 4 seconds. The average speed was 18.93 kts.

During the 2016 Around Ireland Race, Musandam Oman Sail recorded a time of 38 hours 37 minutes and 7 seconds.

The WSSRC was established by the International Yacht Racing Union (now renamed World Sailing) in 1972 to create standards for records, and WSSRC remains the leading authority in verifying record claims.
