Sonar North American Championship

Published on October 2nd, 2016

Fifteen teams endured a marathon schedule of 15 races for the Sonar North American Championship, held September 30 to October 2 at Port Washington, NY.

Gusts up to 30 knots and shifts of 30 degrees on the opening day saw frequent lead changes and wild rides down the spinnaker runs of the windward leeward courses. The wind moderated just a bit for the second day and the third day saw medium to light conditions, but the big shifts continued as the event was held inside Manhasset Bay. The seas outside in the western end of Long Island Sound were, huge, steep and irregular – the boat busting kind.

Colin Gordon of New York Yacht Club took the title with crew Scott Macleod and Tom Kinney, followed by 7-time champion Peter Galloway of Noroton Yacht Club in second and Noroton light air wizard Bob Monro in third.
