US Qualifier Continues at Red Bull Foiling Generation

Published on October 15th, 2016

Newport, RI (October 15, 2016) – The second day of the Red Bull Foiling Generation US Qualifier started this morning with the sun shinning, wind blowing and the competition starting out with Heat 7 which had all the teams that had not yet lost.

Ian McDiarmid and Scott Ewing took the early lead with the Muller brothers in a close second. But Aidan Doyle and Neil Marcellini were not giving up easy and quickly took the lead after the first lap, a position they held to the finish with the Muller brothers in a close second.

Both teams will advance to the final competition to be held tomorrow. Ian McDiarmid and teammate Scott Ewing, along with Maximo Nores and Raul Lopez, still have a chance to bring it all home as they compete in Heat 12 of the Repechage round tomorrow.

Unfortunately, the midday races saw the wind die down a bit but still trudging along, Romain Screve and Pere Puig secured first and bi-coastal teammates Bram Brakman and Rhodes Garner took second in the three-team Heat 8. Picking up the pace in the third and final round of the day, Martha’s Vineyard-based Rasmus Sayre and Miami, Florida’s Shane Riera took first, followed by local Brandon Read with partner Gordon Gurnell.

“It was unfortunate that conditions were not ideal and we were not able to utilize the full force of the foils,” said Head Coach and Extreme Sailing Champion Roman Hagara. “That is the reality of sail racing but we look forward to tomorrow.”
