Hobie fleets head to South Dakota

Published on June 15th, 2017

The 2017 Hobie 16 and Hobie 20 North American’s are in South Dakota at the famous Lewis and Clark Lake near Yankton on June 19 to 23.

The Hobie Class follows a rotation for their events in North America and moves them around to different parts of the region, with the rotation going from east to west to middle. Not too long ago we went to Iowa, which may surprise people that they sail in Iowa. Turns out they do sail in Iowa and the Hobie Class had a really good time at that event.

The Iowa event was held at a big lake surrounded by classic small town America. It was also quite windy as there was nothing (but corn) to block the wind. This year’s event in South Dakota expects to be similar with both the Hobie 16 attracting over 50 teams and the Hobie 20 having over 20 teams meeting to compete for their class regional championships in the middle of America.

Hobie 16 teams to watch will be three times champion Francisco Figueroa/Jolliam Berrios and 12 times champion Enrique Figueroa/Francesca Valdes both from Puerto Rico.

Hobie 20 teams to watch will be reining champions Michael McNeir and Krista Vind who will be pushed hard by John Holmberg/Teri McKenna, George Pedrick/Gene Harris and Mark Zimmer/Kim Zimmer.
