Game time at Optimist North Americans

Published on June 30th, 2017

Toronto, Ontario (June 30, 2017) – Today was the first day of the Championship Final Series for the 178 young Optimist sailors at the 2017 Optimist North American Championship.

Competitors were split into three colour fleets—yellow, blue, and red—based on standings after the Qualifying Series concluded on Wednesday.

Due to light and shifty wind conditions yesterday, the sailors launched their boats early morning only to wait in the harbour, and then the lake, for the fog to lift and the wind to fill in. Eventually the yellow fleet completed two races while the red and blue fleets completed one race each before the course was adjusted to finish the Team Racing Series from Thursday’s competition.

In Individual Fleet racing, top country finishes Friday included Greece, USA, Bermuda, US Virgin Islands, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Australia.

After delays yesterday due to lack of wind, the North American Team Racing Cup concluded today with the four-person Team USA1 besting four sailors from the US Virgin Islands to win gold. Team USA2 brought home the bronze. Team Peru1 won the Natons Team Racing Cup with Argentina1 placing second and Team Brazil1 taking bronze.

The Individual Championship Series will conclude July 1.
