Locals win U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship

Published on July 18th, 2017

Maddie Hawkins (Annapolis, MD) and Kimmie Leonard won the 2017 U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship, winning the 8-race series on July 16-18 in Annapolis, MD.

After a slow beginning to the championship on Sunday (July 16), which included only one race due to light wind, the regatta picked up the pace with four races on Monday and three on Tuesday.

With 35 Club 420 teams competing, it soon became a two boat race as Hawkins/ Leonard and 2016 champions Sarah Burns (Bay Head, NJ) and Patricia Gerli distanced themselves from the field.

The consistency of the winners, posting all top four scores, gave them the two point win, with third place Emma Batcher (San Diego, CA) and Sammy Pickell finishing 34 points back.
