Sail Canada Sailor of the Month

Published on September 19th, 2017

Sail Canada’s Sailor of the Month award acknowledges sailing achievements by Canadians involved or associated with the sport in all its forms. Here is the latest recipient.

Consistency was key at the 2017 Laser Radial World Championships in Medemblik, Netherlands. With tricky sailing conditions and a highly competitive fleet, every decision and every point counted. Brenda Bowskill hit the water strong, scoring a bullet in the first race of the World Championships, and continued to sail with composure and confidence throughout the event to finish an impressive 5th place overall!

“I think one of my strengths as a sailor is that I don’t have a condition weakness,” said Bowskill. “There’s isn’t one type of wind that I feel I really struggle in and so I knew I was prepared for whatever Holland threw my way. When it was time to race, I made a choice to not look at forecasts or results and took each race one by one, day by day.

“One of my main focuses was to stay composed regardless of the result and stay focused in what I had to do in that moment. This in itself takes quite an amount of energy but I was able to stay composed for the full 6 days which showed in my results.”

This is Brenda’s third time being awarded our Sailor of the Month! Brenda is a 2016 Rio Olympian and is working towards the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, her next big event will be the first regatta in the World Cup Series in Gamagori, Japan in October.

“I am very happy with the progress I have made since the Games and I am eager to see how far I can go leading towards Tokyo 2020,” said Bowskill on her performance at the 2017 Radial World Championships.

Other notable performances by the Canadian Sailing Team last month:
• Radial sailor Sarah Douglas (ABYC, ON) for her 12th place finish at the 2017 Radial World Championships. This is a personal best at a World Championship for Sarah!
• Finn sailor Tom Ramshaw (SLYC, ON) for finishing 6th at the Aarhus World Sailing Championship Test Event.

The 2018 Sailing World Championships will be held in Aarhus, Denmark in July 2018 bringing together the best sailors in the world in all Olympic classes.

Congratulations to Helly Hansen Sailor of the Month – Brenda Bowskill – RCYC, Toronto, ON.
