Ives Wins (Again) Cal 20 Champs

San Pedro, CA (September 25, 2017) – Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club in San Pedro, California hosted the 56th Cal 20 Class Championships on September 22 – 24. Sailing took place inside Los Angeles Harbor under light air conditions on the first two days with the final and third day offering up an ideal 12-14 knot sea breeze. A total of 30 Cal 20’s raced in two separate divisions including Gold (21 boats) and Bronze (9 boats) fleets. Even though the Cal 20 has been out of production for approximately 40 years, the class still has a strong Southern California following.

A down to the wire finish in the final race of the Cal 20 Class Championships determined the winner of the class’s 56th championship. Keith Ives and longtime crew Chuck Stevens repeated as Class Champions by winning the final two races of the series and pulling one point ahead of second place finishers Chuck Clay and crew Pat McCormick who were leading the series going into the final race. These two teams also finished first and second at last year’s Class Championships.

Other notable finishers included Gold fleet third place finisher and top Masters Finisher Stu Robertson sailing with Scott Atwood. Jennifer Kuritz repeated as the top finishing woman skipper. In the Bronze fleet, Tony Johansing prevailed by winning three of the four scheduled Bronze fleet races. The Cal 20 Class introduced the Bronze fleet six years ago for those new to racing or looking for a more casual mode of racing at a Championship regatta.

The Cal 20 is proud to remain a purely Corinthian class per class rules.
