Cayard/Fatih Lead Inaugural Vintage Gold Cup

Published on September 28th, 2017

Richland, MI (September 28, 2017) – The Vintage Gold Cup kicked off racing today on Gull Lake. The Vintage Gold Cup is an annual sailing regatta that will celebrate the illustrious history of the Star Boat and the Star Class. It is open to Star Class members who have a Vintage Wooden Star Boat.

There are two categories for the boats entered: Classic Vintage, wood Star boats that have been restored to approximate original specifications including a wooden mast and boom, and Performance Vintage, wood Star boats that have been restored to race with modern equipment.

Most of the boats are over 50 years old and all are wood. They have been updated with aluminum masts and currents sails. In addition to watching these wooden Stars in action, sailors and spectators are able to learn about the history and restoration of the participating wooden Stars.

The inaugural Star Vintage Gold Cup Regatta is a ‘who’s who’ group of Star enthusiasts sailing vintage wood Stars. This event is the brainchild of Don Parfet and Jon Vandermolen (Pstar builder) who have both been working hard to restore many of the 12 boats entered. The entry list is impressive with Paul Cayard, Mark Reynolds, Larry Whipple, Tom Londrigan, Arthur Anasov, John MacCausland, just to name a few.

Day 1 opened with a 9 hole golf event followed by the first warning at 12:55. Paul Cayard with crew Brian Fatih dominated the day winning both races wire to wire even though neither had sailed on Gull Lake before this regatta. Cayard started the regatta with a port tack on the entire fleet at the first start.

Arthur Anosov/Dave Caeser are second with Jon Vandermolen/Rick Burgess in third place overall. Mark Reynolds, in Flapper, with Michael Brundage are in fourth. It was a typical shifty Gull Lake day in the 8 to 10 knot range with a number of auto-tacks on the first beat.

Tonight’s dinner is at the Gilmore Car Museum where we can drive some of the cars around the farm.

Three races are scheduled tomorrow, but the wind prediction may be a little on the heavy side for these boats. More golf and two more races for Saturday (Sept 30). There is an award for a combined gold/sailing score.

The inaugural event on Gull Lake is being held September 28 to 30.
