Twenty Years for the Harbor 20

Published on September 29th, 2017

The 20th running of the Harbor 20 Fleet One Championships is planned for September 30 to October 1 in Newport Beach, CA. As ground zero for the class, over 30 teams will compete in three different divisions: A’s, B’s and C’s.

Amid the fleet, nineteen teams are either married couples or descendants which is the strength of the Harbor 20 Association. Fifteen minutes is all that is needed to arrive at the race course which is held in the five points area of Newport Harbor. Most races are about twenty minutes in length and are clearly set up in a windward-leeward format with the occasional reaching mark to break things up a little.

The weather forecast is for winds out of the southwest at 8 to 10 knots and like in most short course racing, in light winds, attention will be focused on boat speed and clear wind while trying to compile top five finishes in an effort to bring home a pickle dish.

Saturday night’s dinner banquet is always well attended and makes for one of the highlights of wrapping up the sailing season. The 2018 season starts in four weeks, which is why we live in Southern California.
