Sail Canada Sailor of the Month

Published on January 25th, 2018

Sail Canada’s Sailor of the Month award acknowledges sailing achievements by Canadians involved or associated with the sport in all its forms. Here is the latest recipient.

December was quite the month for the I420 girls Georgia Lewin-LaFrance (RNSYS) & Maddie Gillis (RNSYS) as they competed at the 2017 Youth World Sailing Championship in Sanya, China.

Competing in the event for their second time, the veterans showed impressive skills on the water. Despite the challenging weather of light and puffy winds, the duo marked their way up the scoreboard by placing a bullet on the second day of racing, moving them up to 7th place.

Their efforts didn’t stop there, as the I420 team kept their momentum throughout the event finishing at an impressive 6th place overall, marking the best Canadian finish in the I-420 fleet at a Youth World event.

Both experienced sailors, the athletes got together under two years ago after sailing I420’s with different partners. Since coming together the duo have competed in three major international events including the 2016 Youth World Sailing Championships in New Zealand, the 2017 I420 Open Europeans in Greece, and the 2017 Youth World Sailing Championships in Sanya, China.

A notable mention goes out to Bruce Kirby appointed to the Order of Canada!

Congratulations to Helly Hansen Sailor of the Month – Georgia Lewin-LaFrance & Maddie Gillis.
