Irish step up at Star Midwinters

Miami, FL (February 10, 2018) – The wind gods, once again, smiled upon the Star sailors on Biscayne Bay for day three of the Midwinter Championship. The day brought a bit of a mix up in the scores at the top.

The American team of Paul Cayard / Josh Revkin (USA), who had a slow start to the series, gave another strong performance in the breeze for the win in the first race today. In the second race, they got off to the wrong side of the course and finished a disappointing fifteenth. The leaders going into today, Jack Jennings / Frithjof Kleen (USA/GER), were OCS in the first race under a U flag. They came back to life in the second race, with a second place, but in the Star Midwinters there are no discards, so the team carries their OCS, dropping them off the leader board.

Arthur Anasov / David Cesar (USA), won the second race of the day. Their win and their consistent finishes in the top ten, brought them up to fifth overall. Augie Diaz / Bruno Prada (USA/BRA) found themselves in the back of the fleet in the second race, but climbed their way back to twelfth, which was enough to move them up into second overall.

At top of the leader board are Ireland’s O’Leary brothers. Despite not winning any races, they are the only boat in the fleet that does not have any finished out of the top ten. They lead by fourteen points going into the last day of racing.

As part of the Star Winter Series, racing continues through Sunday, February 11.

Scoring for the Star Winter Series: Points shall be determined from the finishing place at each regatta. The sum of the best three of the four 2-day regattas, plus the Mid-Winter regatta place multiplied by two, will determine the winner of the Winter series.
