Is the Yacht Club bar under siege?

Published on May 17th, 2018

As states in the USA wrestle with the legality of marijuana, the connection of cannabis with our sport continues to sail on.

Whether or not you’re a marijuana enthusiast, you’re probably aware that April 20—4/20—is a day when pot smokers around the world come together to, well, smoke pot. Others use the day to push for legalization, holding marches and rallies.

The numerical reference began in the 70’s from a bunch of Northern California high school students who would meet at that time – 4:20p – to smoke after school. When the Grateful Dead picked it up, “420” spread through the greater community like wildfire.

And the term is not lost on sailing where the International 420 is a dominant class around the world while an institutional version, the Club 420, is the prevailing youth boat in the USA. Sailing 420s on 4/20 completes the trifecta.

Now we learn that Sail, an Ontario-based company that’s a global leader in medical cannabis-focused software, was selected by the Association of Cannabis Specialists to support more than 300-member physicians in the United States. The company’s website is sailcannabis.co.

What’s next, post-race smoke sponsors?
