Brazil leads Snipe Women’s Worlds

Newport, RI (August 16, 2018) – Thirty-two teams headed onto Narragansett Bay for day one of the 2018 Snipe Women’s World Championship. Two races were sailed in a light and puffy northwesterly breeze coming off the land, which made unexpectedly lake-like sailing. Sailing incredibly consistent was the reigning Women’s World Champion, Brazilian Juliana Duque sailing with Marina Arndt, who leads with a 1-2.

The Brazilians are closely followed by the Norwegians, Melsome-Myhre and Krefting, who battled to win the second race of the day. Results are provisional as the two teams head into the Protest room at press time.

Two knots of current, added to the extremely shifty conditions making the windward mark and offset mark dangerous places. Numerous teams in the front of the fleet hit the marks and others had to jibe away, shuffling positions like a train stations arrivals board. Boats further back in the fleet learned from the first boats around at the marks and all seemed to adapt to the current by race two.

New faces also shone at the front of the fleet, including young skippers Liz Glivinski and Katie Levinson, both from the Mystic Lake, home of Tufts Sailing and the local Boston Snipe Fleet. The light shifty conditions made them feel at home and they both sailed confidently among the strong fleet.

Recent University of Rhode Island graduate, Rachel Bryer, who was a two-time runner up at College Nationals, found herself at the front of the fleet during the second race. Bryer, sailing with Marisa DeCollibus, has only a couple practice sessions under her belt and is racing in her first Snipe regatta. The pair are having fun and looking forward to the rest of the week.

Nice races are planned from August 16 to 19.
