Paris calls it quits for a fourth time

Published on December 16th, 2018

Dr Stanley Paris, who had been trying since 2014 to solo circumnavigate the world, has failed in his fourth and final attempt. The 81 year old set out on November 29 on his Finot-Conq 53 Kiwi Spirit II from St. Augustine, FL, but a list of issues while to the east of British Virgin Islands has him turning back.

“Never in over my 100,000 sea miles have I had so much go wrong so soon,” said Paris on December 15. “Major problems include loss of bilge pumps, loss of two starboard side hydro generators so necessary for power. In addition, diesel fuel leaks into bilges and fresh water system failure.”

Paris hopes to reach St. Augustine sometime between Christmas and New Years.

In his fourth and final attempt, these were his goals for the trip:
1. Just get around nonstop.
2. Challenge Dodge Morgan’s 1986 solo Bermuda back to Bermuda of 150 days, 1 hour and 6 minutes.
3. Be the second to do it green. Conrad Coleman managed it in the 2016-17 Vendee Globe.
4. Be the oldest at 81 years.
5. Set a record from St. Augustine.
