America’s Cup: The quiet fifth team

With four America’s Cup teams having launched their first AC75s, each sharing imagery of their foiling monohulls, it’s easy to forget there’s also a fifth team in the event.

Co-founded by professional American sailors Mike Buckley and Taylor Canfield, Stars + Stripes Team USA was initially quite active on social media but more recently has been exceedingly low key, rebuffing inquiries for updates on their status.

But during a Sailing World magazine video program which included columnist Gary Jobson and Canfield, Jobson took the opportunity to inquire:

Jobson:
“Whatever happened to the Stars + Stripes Team USA challenge? It has gone unbelievably quiet for months. Does it still exist?”

Canfield:
“It still does exist and we are now waiting to see what happens as there are a lot of unknowns right now with the America’s Cup. There’s a question of whether the main event will be delayed, and as we have already seen, two of the America’s Cup World Series events have been cancelled. We have been pushing hard with fundraising, and have built a big portion of a race boat, so now we are waiting to hear what becomes of the Cup, waiting for what the organizers decide, and based on that we will make decisions on how we can proceed. This is obviously buying us some time which has been helpful. So yes, the campaign is still alive.”

36th America’s Cup
In addition to Challenges from Italy, USA, and Great Britain that were accepted during the initial entry period (January 1 to June 30, 2018), eight additional Notices of Challenge were received by the late entry deadline on November 30, 2018. Of those eight submittals, entries from Malta, USA, and the Netherlands were also accepted. Here’s the list:

Of the three late entries, only Stars+Stripes USA remains committed, but they still must complete the entry fee payment process before they will be eligible to race. They have allegedly made their initial payment but as a late entry challenger under the Protocol, they also have a liability to pay a US$1million late entry fee due in installments by October 1, 2019. However, it is not yet confirmed if they have paid the fee, nor is there any knowledge of a boat being actively built or sailing team training.
