As part of the bid to promote the role of the Media Crew Member (MCM) onboard each boat, Inmarsat, the technology sponsor of the Volvo Ocean Race, is putting up a cash prize for the best piece of footage coming off the boats on each leg. There is also an overall cash prize.

Scuttlebutt has partnered with Inmarsat to help showcase the work of the MCM, and will be posting the award winning footage following each leg.

Leg 1 - Leg 2 - Leg 3 - Leg 4 - Leg 5 - Leg 6 - Leg 7 - Leg 8 - Leg 9 - Leg 10

Here are the men that are onboard each boat, not to help sail the boat, but to help tell the story:
PUMA - ERICSSON 4 - ERICSSON 3 - RUSSIAN TEAM
TELEFONICA BLACK - TELEFONICA BLUE - GREEN DRAGON - TEAM DELTA LLOYD

Puma Ocean Racing Team ‘ IL MOSTRO’
RICK DEPPE, 44. An experienced British sailor and acclaimed videographer, whose credits include Deadliest Catch on Discovery Channel, Deppe will act as the media specialist for the PUMA Ocean Racing team aboard Il Mostro. “This is a fantastic opportunity for me on a number of levels. I’m a sailor and I love to sail, but I’m also an experienced documentarian, and this time out, my job is to keep the camera rolling and get some great shots over the course of nine months of action.” Deppe was also the onboard cameraman for the film "Morning Light" that was released in October 2008, which documented the training and racing of 15 young sailors in the 2007 TransPac Race.

ERICSSON 4
GUY SALTER, 36. On the international team, Ericsson 4. His sailing history covers two America’s Cups and the Volvo Ocean Race 2000-2001. Graduated from film school with BSc (Hons) in biology, as well as film and photography. “The environment is obviously very difficult. Electronics don’t enjoy salt water – or any water. Plus the boats are violent and there’s a lot of being thrown around on the waves. So that’s the first challenge and then it’s keeping out of the way of my brother and anyone else who needs to keep the boat going as fast as possible,” he says. He has reported back that the balance of staying out of the way and documenting onboard life is working well so far. Lives on the Isle of Wight.

He successfully passed the strict pre-race sailing team trials making him the first Chinese sailor to compete on the Volvo Ocean Race. “It has been a roller coaster ride since my sailing trials in Cork, Ireland. It seems amazing that we are just weeks away from the first leg and I am spending time learning the list of jobs for the media crew member onboard the boat. From the filming, editing and water testing, to learning more about the boat, sailing onboard with the crew and of course improving my English language skills. This race will be a huge test but I can’t wait to get going.”

I’m not here because I am such a good sailor but because of my talent for making interesting TV. Once we’re all clear on that, there should be any problem.”
