11 Countries to Contest Nations Cup

The Nations Cup begins on Wednesday, August 7 in Middelfart, Denmark, with 11 countries confirmed in a highly competitive field of skippers. Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, Norway, Sweden, Singapore and USA will contest the Open competition, and Brazil, Denmark, Norway and USA, the women’s competition. Dustin Durant will represent the US in the Open Competition and Sandy Hayes in the women’s competition.

The bi-annual Nations Cup is the showcase event for sailing’s emerging match racing talent and former winners include Ed Baird, the 2007 America’s Cup winning helmsman. The opening ceremony will take place on the evening of Tuesday, August 6 with racing through to finals day on Saturday, August 10.

Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark will be contesting an exhibition match on August 8, skippering an Olympic class team of Danish legends, including Jesper Bank. He will face a crew led by one of Denmark’s brightest talents, the 23-year-old Nicholas Sehested, who is ranked 12th in the world and is one of the favourites for the Nations Cup.
