Events confirmed for 2023 Panam Games

Published on March 11th, 2021

The Sailing Program for the Santiago 2023 Panam Games has been finalized with 12 events, an increase from the 11 events held at the Lima 2019 Panam Games, which also saw an increase over the 10 medals awarded at the Toronto 2015 Panam Games.

The 2023 Pan Am Games are set to take place between October 22 to November 5 in Chile’s capital and largest city.

The notable change for 2023 is for the 1-person Dinghy (Open) event, historically held in Sunfish, to now be a Men’s and Women’s event in the Sunfish. Overall, the Sailing Program has both Olympic events and equipment as well as popular regional equipment in the Americas.

Sailing Program – Santiago 2023 Panam Games:
Men’s Windsurfing – iQFoil*
Women’s Windsurfing – iQFoil*
Men’s One Person Dinghy – ILCA Standard*
Women’s One Person Dinghy – ILCA Radial*
Men’s Skiff – 49er*
Women’s Skiff – 49erFx*
Mixed Multihull – Nacra 17*
Mixed Kiteboard Relay – Formula Kite Class*
Men’s One Person Dinghy – Sunfish
Women’s One Person Dinghy – Sunfish
Mixed Two Person Dinghy – Snipe
Mixed Three Person Dinghy (2 women, 1 man) – Lightning
* Events/Equipment selected for Paris 2024 Olympics

Notable is the Snipe Class which has been used in every Panam Games that has included Sailing (only Mexico City 1955 did not include Sailing), and the Lightning is the second longest included Equipment Class, only missing the 1951 and 2003 Pan Am Games.

While there is an increase in Medals, participation will not increase from the 168 Athlete Quota places from Lima 2019. However, the four Gold Medalists at the Cali 2021 Junior Panam Games will be an additional four Named Athletes at the Santiago 2023 Panam Games, bringing the final athlete total for Santiago 2023 to 172 athletes.

It is anticipated, based on discussions with World Sailing, that the eight 2023 Panam events to be held at the Paris 2024 Olympics will serve as Country Qualifying Events for Paris 2024.

The distribution of the 168 + 4 Named athlete quota among the 12 events will be announced at the same time as the Country Qualifying System, which is expected to occur by November 2021, 2-years prior to the Santiago 2023 Panam Games.
