Enrique Figueroa with wife Carla Malatrasi won his
sixth Hobie 16 North American Championship last week
in Narragansett Rhode Island. Figueroa is a
professional Tornado sailor and part of a strong group
of Hobie 16 sailors from his home in Puerto Rico. In a
repeat of last years championship the Guatemalans Juan
Maegli sailing with Enrique Arathoon finished the week
in second. These young Guatemalans have plenty of
years ahead of them both are still eligible to compete
in Jr. events. Juan is presently competing in high
school sailing in the US on the Portsmouth Abbey team.
Rounding out the top three was the former Olympic
board sailor from Venezuela Yamil Saba sailing with
Gonzalo Cendra. In fourth with the final Pan Am Games
spot awarded at this event was former North American
Champions from Mexico Armando Noriega and Roderigo
Achach. Bob Merrick and Eliza Cleveland where the to
Americans in fifth place.
