1st Annual charles Schwab junior sailing cup comes to chesapeake bay

Unique Competition Supports Local Children And Teens Interested In Sailing

ANNAPOLIS, April 20, 2007 Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. today announced the launch of the 1st annual Charles Schwab Junior Sailing Cup (CSJSC).  Designed to provide teens interested in sailing with a platform for skill development and teambuilding through structured competition, the CSJSC will begin May 10 on the Chesapeake Bay, and run through the end of August.

This year three yacht clubs on the upper Chesapeake Bay will participate with their Junior Sailing programs. Participating yacht clubs include the Annapolis Yacht Club (AYC), Eastport Yacht Club (EYC) and the Severn Sailing Association (SSA).

“We have been working with the Upper Chesapeake Bay sailing community for the past three years, and are excited to broaden our involvement through this program that supports local youth interested in developing their sailing skills,” said Andrew Coyne, vice president and branch manager of the Annapolis Charles Schwab office.  “We look forward to supporting this event as it grows over the next few years.”

How the CSJSC works

The Charles Schwab Junior Sailing Cup is a points-based regatta.  Points will be awarded for first, second and third place finishes in weekly races beginning on May 10, and concluding at the end of August.  The three teams will enter pre-existing weekly races, with each yacht club crewing a J80 sail boat. The J80 Class is considered a “big boat,” which gives junior sailors a unique opportunity to train on larger craft. At the end of the season, points will be tallied and the winning team will receive the Charles Schwab Junior Sailing Cup for display in their home yacht club.

Boats, instructors, race committee, judging, and scoring will all be overseen by J World Annapolis (http://www.sailjworld.com/). Charles Schwab will have access to a fourth “spectator” boat, which will follow each race and provides the participants’ parents with “on the water” access to the race and a special opportunity to watch their children compete.
