Yacht drama in Sydney harbour

(October 26, 2004) Sydney Opera House was the backdrop for a maritime drama today when a former America’s Cup racing yacht slammed into an underwater object near the landmark and tipped onto its side.

The 72-ft FT Spirit, sponsored by the Financial Times, ran aground around noon, ripping the ballast bulb off the yacht and quickly ending what was supposed to be a promotional outing with their new sponsor.

The FT Spirit was formerly known as the Spirit of Australia and contested the 1992 America’s Cup in San Diego, California. Complete story.
