Scuttlebutt Photos: Emma Maersk
The Largest Container Ship in the World

(Dec. 6, 2006) 'Butthead James King from Australia submitted these photos, and reports that they "are of the Emma Maersk, the largest container ship in the world, operating at the largest port in the world (Rotterdam). Note the 11 cranes going at the same time. Here is some additional information:

  • Length -- 397m
  • Width -- 63m
  • Deadweight -- 123,200 tonnes
  • Engine -- 14 cylinder diesel, 110,000 BHP
  • Top speed -- 50kph
  • Estimated cost -- over US$145 million
  • Capacity -- 15,000 TEU (1 TEU = 1 x 20ft container)

  • Apparently the silicon paint covering the part of the hull below the waterline lowers the drag in the water so much that the vessel economizes 1.2 million litres of fuel per year!"
