To accurately determine shroud tension, the Loos Gauge (left photo) has been used for years to aid in rig tuning. However, Harken appears to have brought this tool into the digital age with their introduction of the RigTune Pro (right photo). Developed in partnership with Lou Varney of Diverse Yachts/Tropical Engineering, this innovative product is intended to measure and fine-tune rigging with far greater accuracy.

Last weekend, the Maxi 82 Sorcery was relocated to Glen Cove Marina in Vallejo, CA (near San Francisco), but unfortunately their shore crew miscalculated the depth. Photo by Brian Vanderspek.

Sir Durward Knowles

The International Star Class Yacht Racing Association and the Bahamas joined in the celebration of the 90th birthday for Class Commodore, Sir Durward Knowles, which took place on November 10, 2007. Sir Durward was the Star World Champion in 1947 and had an Olympic career that spanned forty years from 1948 through 1988, a record he shares with Magnus Konow, Ivan Osuer, and Paul Elvstrom. Professional yachting events are investing some serious euros into their special events, such as the pre-race party for the Barcelona World Race, the double-handed Open 60 round the world race that started on November 11, 2007. The theme for this party seems to be a cross between Cirque du Soleil and Wonder Woman. Photos by Jürg Kaufmann.

As Hurricane Noel landed in Newport, RI, photographer Jens Paech took these images from his living room window as the disaster unfolded. Eight or nine boats were destroyed in the harbor that day. All Photos © 2007 Jens Paech.
