Scuttlebutt Photos:
Rescue on the Tasman Sea

Photographs of the rescue on the Tasman Sea by the cruise ship "Regent Seven Seas Mariner" to a Mayday sent November 23, 2009 by German, solo around the world sailor Bernt Luechtenborg aboard 52 foot sailboat "Horizons". Sailor had been at sea for 148 days.

Rescue New Zealand radioed the "Mariner" en route from Hobart to New Zealand to alter course three hundred miles away to rescue the sailor aboard the yacht who had broken his rudder in a storm two days earlier. "Mariner" arrived twenty-four hours later (Nov. 24) and did a brilliant rescue in 15 foot seas and winds blowing 45 kts.

Photos of the rescue by Maureen C. Koeppel who was a guest aboard the cruise ship.
