What is RSS?
RSS stands for “really simple syndication.” On your computer, you use a program called an RSS aggregator or reader to subscribe to your favorite websites (RSS programs are easily downloadable - see below). Your RSS program checks your subscriptions periodically to see if there’s anything new on these websites. It displays one-line summaries of new updates that easily can be scanned, and if you are interested, you click on the summary to view the contents on the website. Best of all, it can all be free.
Why RSS?
There are alot of ways to get your information these days. If you find yourself spending alot of time surfing the web, RSS is a timesaver. With an RSS program, you subscribe to your favorite websites, and a browser screen alerts you with any updates.
Scuttlebutt and RSS
There are now three ways to receive your daily fix of Scuttlebutt. You can subscribe to receive the email version, you can go to the Scuttlebutt website direct, or you can use your RSS program to have the latest issue of Scuttlebutt from the website delivered to you. The Scuttlebutt RSS link takes you to the Archives section, where each issue of Scuttlebutt is saved for your convenience.
Downloading an RSS Aggregator
There are a bunch of these programs out there - many of them free - and they work a lot like an email program. A frequently recommended free program for Windows 2000 or Windows XP is SharpReader. For earlier versions of Windows, try RSSReader or RSS Bandit. For Mac, try the OSX reader, Shrook. Additional programs can be found by clicking here.
