Editor’s Rant: Unique Event Websites

The online expectations for sailing events have increased to now be a vital component for a prominent event’s success. In determining how to fulfill these expectations, a decision must be made on where the information is to reside on the internet.

To repeat a frequent and still relevant rant, the worst decision that can made is to secure a custom website address that will be used for only that event.

An example is the 2013 Star World Championship, which was hosted by San Diego Yacht Club and sponsored by tech giant Qualcomm which is headquartered in San Diego, CA.

Here’s the website: www.StarWorld2013.com

The website was stocked full of information, but what occurs with every single-use event URL is they are secured for only a few years and not renewed. When the URL expires, the information and all the linkage is gone.
