America’s Cup: Max Sirena Trading Places

Published on October 6th, 2015

(October 6, 2015) – Team Luna Rossa Challenge’s former Skipper and Team Director Max Sirena has joined Emirates Team New Zealand’s management in preparation for their challenge of the 35th America’s Cup in 2017. These two teams were training partners during the 34th America’s Cup.

On the 2nd of April 2015, Luna Rossa Challenge decided to withdraw from the 35th America’s Cup as a consequence of the abrupt and unacceptable imposition from the Defender introducing substantial changes of the characteristics of the boat to be used in the 35th America’s Cup, which were already announced and unanimously accepted by all Challengers since June 2014.

“This opportunity enables me to continue a path initiated almost twenty years ago and to remain involved in the America’s Cup environment, also by following its technical developments,” notes Sirena. “Therefore I would like to thank Grant Dalton for offering me this position in the Team and, of course, Patrizio Bertelli and the Board of Emirates Team New Zealand who made my involvement possible.”
