Read brothers dominate DF95 Nationals

The 2025 DF95 US National Championship attracted 58 competitors on October 17-19 in Newport, RI. Brad Read won the 14 race series, beating his brother Ken Read by three points with Brian Shores 36 points off the lead.

Entrants came from Barbados, United Kingdom, and across the USA, having advanced from regional events to earn a berth in the remote-controlled sailing championship.

“I’d like to think that Kenny is so good because I push him,” noted Brad Read. “But certainly, I would not be nearly as good as I’ve gotten without him pushing me. The local [Newport] fleet is just so good and so deep that we’ve all gotten better together. But certainly Kenny pushed me super hard, and the success I had this weekend was due to the push.”

Activity at Newport Model Sailing Club, which co-hosted the event with Sail Newport, burst in popularity during the COVID pandemic.

“I had no idea what we were doing at first,” added Ken Read. “But, it’s addicting, I love it, and it’s made me a better sailor.”
