TRICKS OF THE TRADE
After winning a bronze medal at the Delta Lloyd Regatta, the fifth
International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Sailing World Cup event in the
2009-2010 series, Andy Horton talked to US SAILING about what he likes most
about sailing Stars, what he’s doing differently in this Olympic campaign,
and shares some key tricks of the trade for all sailors and athletes alike.
US SAILING: What do you like most about sailing Stars?
HORTON: Number one, it’s the competition. I think it’s the best racing in
the world. The second thing I like is the technical part of the boat. And
third, the camaraderie in the class is pretty tight. Those are the three big
things.
US SAILING: What do you like most about the technical aspects of the boat?
HORTON: One of the things I love about the Star is that it has a lot of
technical options and space. There are many different boat builders and sail
makers, and everything is quite changeable. You can tune the mast in 10
different ways and positions. You can build your boat in your backyard if
you want; I like that. It’s intriguing. I like constantly learning and
trying out new techniques. The boat is really about balance. It gives you
feedback to make it go fast, in terms of setting up the masts and sails in
variety of conditions. I like learning about it and figuring out why the
boat is acting a certain way, or why other boats are passing us.
US SAILING: The Star is known for being a very physical boat. Can you please
explain?
HORTON: The Star is actually more of a dinghy than a keel boat. The boat is
active and lively and powerful, so it’s quite fun to sail. The sails are
big. The boat is powered up in 9-10 knots of breeze. So the person who hikes
the hardest, typically is the fastest.
US SAILING: How important is your physical strength in handling the Star?
HORTON: We need to be pretty strong for sure… to be able to handle it well
in breeze. If you’re lighter, you give up. You need to be able to hike
upwind and downwind as the skipper – you end up hiking the whole time, in
fact. In order to do that, you need strong core and upper body strength.

WEATHER HAMPERS RACING AT COLLEGE NATIONALS
Madison, WI (June 2, 2010) - Conditions on Lake Mendota were all over the
place for the second and penultimate day of competition at the 2010
ICSA/Gill National Championship. A light shifting breeze soon gave way to a
severe thunderstorm warning - indicating the possibility of golf ball-sized
hail and damaging winds - kept the fleet ashore for most of the afternoon.
Just before 7:00 p.m. CDT, B-Division headed out for race 8B in a
northeasterly breeze of 13 knots and light rain. The waning daylight put an
end to racing for the day with the scoreboard now reflecting 10 races for
A-Division and nine for B-Division.
Entering the day with an 18 point lead, Boston College saw most of their
margin evaporate when A-Division team Tyler Sinks/ Laura McKenna closed the
day with a 14-16-16, but B-Division team of Taylor Canfield/ Sandra Williams
continue to dominate their division and the school now clings to a five
point lead over Harvard University. There will be an early start for the
final race day on Thursday, with the competitor’s meeting moved up to 8:30
a.m. and the first warning signal given as soon as practicable thereafter.

SEEDING NEARLY COMPLETE
Sardinia, Italy (June 2, 2010; Day 12) - Strong gusty northwest winds at at
Louis Vuitton Trophy La Maddalena curtailed racing for much of the day and
only two races were sailed in 20-knot winds, close to the top limit for
competition, before race officials abandoned racing for the day. With wins
by All4One and Mascalzone Latino in their matches over ALEPH Sailing Team
and TeamOrigin respectively, the ranking of the top eight is nearly
confirmed with only two races remaining.
Thursday’s races will see All4One against Artemis and Emirates Team New
Zealand against Mascalzone Latino. The ranking of the top eight will
determine the best of three quarterfinal matches (4 v. 5, 3 v. 6, 2 v. 7, 1
v. 8), but with the timeline requiring the quarters to be completed by June
3rd, a revised race schedule could see the top two seeds automatically
advancing to the Semi-Final round. All racing concludes June 6th.

BOATU.S. SANTA MARIA CUP
Annapolis, MD (June 2, 2010) - The first day of the 20th annual BoatU.S.
Santa Maria Cup international ISAF Grade 1 women’s match-racing regatta saw
light and shifting breeze keep the racers ashore through the morning today,
but by noon a light southeasterly had settled in enough to get racing
underway out of Eastport Yacht Club on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay.
Ten teams of the top-ranked female match racers in the world, including six
of the top eleven, are facing off in the series, which runs through
Saturday, June 5. By late afternoon, five sets of matches in the
double-round-robin phase of the regatta had been completed and two U.S.
teams - led by Anna Tunnicliffe and Sally Barkow - were holding perfect
records of five wins each.
Defending Santa Maria Cup champion Claire Leroy, a Frenchwoman ranked #2 in
the world and the top seed in this regatta, lost her only match to Genny
Tulloch (USA) for a 4-1 record today. -- Full report:

COOLEST RACE ON THE GREAT LAKES
For some the challenge will be making the start line due to the low water
levels on Lake Ontario; for others the challenge will be the unpredictable
weather we are experiencing. While most people are getting ready for a nice
bar-b-que or heading up to the cottage to enjoy the first Friday in June,
over 300 sailors are preparing for a very different adventure. They will
leave their jobs, pack their best and warmest wet weather clothing - and of
course most importantly their safety gear to get ready for the 8pm start of
the 73 mile overnight yacht race.
The Susan Hood Trophy Race is the first 2010 overnight yacht race of the
year on Lake Ontario, starting Friday June 4th from Port Credit Yacht Club
in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. This is one of the most exciting and
challenging races on the Great Lakes since this time of year tends to bring
unpredictable weather. This year is no exception.
In the past it has been referred to as the Coldest Race on the Lakes, but
race organizers have dubbed it the “Coolest Race on the Lakes”. Due to the
cold water and warm weather patterns around the lake, storms can come in
without much warning. With the wind chill factor coming across the extremely
cold water, the feeling equates to being out on a damp winter night when
there is seemingly never enough clothing to put on. Given the water
temperature at this time of the year, attention to safety is a critical
component of successfully completing the race for more than the obvious
reasons! The ultimate nightmare would be to have to rescue a crew member

* (June 2, 2010) - The latest ISAF World Sailing Rankings for have been
released, which rates skippers based on their performances over the last two
years. Among the 10 Olympic events, the top ranked North Americans are Mark
Mendelblatt (USA; Star - 4), Paige Railey (USA; Laser Radial - 4), and Zach
Railey (USA; Finn - 4). The next issue of the rankings will be released on

* The 39th Annual Figawi Race from Hyannis to Nantucket had a total of 230
sailboats entered in Saturday's race on May 29th, which saw fifteen to
twenty-knot southwest winds and a steep Nantucket Sound chop of 3-5 feet. On
May 31st, Monday's race back to Hyannis saw a total of 41 entries compete in
a light easterly which built and clocked during the day to a 12-14 knot
southeasterly, lifting those who favored the westerly side of the course

* (June 2, 2010; Day 3) - At 0400 this morning the 100ft super-maxi racing
yacht ICAP Leopard was exactly half way along their 2,925 nautical mile west
to east monohull transatlantic speed record attempt and equal to the pace of
Mari Cha, which holds the record for non-power assisted yachts (of 6 da, 17
hr, 52 mn set in 2003). By 2200, ICAP Leopard was 266 nm ahead of their 2008
record for a power-assisted yacht (of 7 da, 19 hr, 20 mn). --

* Florida Governor Charlie Crist last week signed into law a Jobs for
Florida bill that included a tax cap on boat sales. The new law limits the
six per cent sales-use tax on boat purchases to US$18,000. Proponents of the
bill, which included the Florida Yacht Brokers Association (FYBA) and Marine
Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF), said it would help save

* The first Boating and Outdoor Recreation Festival is scheduled for Sept.
22-26 at Metro Beach Metropark in Mount Clemens, Mich., the Michigan Boating

EIGHT BELLS
Kenneth M. MacKenzie, 69, of Mattapoisett, MA died May 27, 2010, at home
after a long illness. He was the former owner and operator the SV
Ticonderoga chartering in the Caribbean and the West Indies and performed
finish and restoration work on yachts.
Ken was an accomplished yachtsman, having participated in 12 Antigua Race
Weeks, raced in Southern Ocean Racing Conference on Mistress Quickly
1980-81, made many trans-Atlantic passages and experienced eight survival
type storms including Hurricane Gilda along with the 1979 Fastnet Race where
17 lives and 21 boats were lost.
Ken had organized the first and second Mount Gay Rum Regattas in 1974 and
1975, which evolved into the Classic Yacht Regatta. As owner/captain of
Ticonderoga, he was overall winner of 1976 Tall Ships Race Bermuda to
Newport, was an America's Cup reserve crew on 12 meter Enterprise, and
captained Off Soundings and Physalia, both 70-foot motor sailers and Lord

Mike Slade a lucky man to own Leopard, he’s clearly a deft marketing guy.
Whenever the boat is mentioned, she’s known as “ICAP Leopard owned by

paint on the hull, but equally effective in print. Heck, maybe that’s the
boat’s full name…

The Clipper 09-10 Round The World Yacht Race left Jamaica on Monday 24 May,
under warm skies and light winds. Over early at the start, we had to round
the port mark and start our journey to NYC. Approximately 1400nm, we split
Cuba and Haiti, and then headed for the Crooked Island passage with 3 other
Clipper Yachts, for the moment in 2nd place. Shorter by a mile, it turned
out to be the wrong choice, and the 6 other Clipper Yachts took off. Fast
forward 7 days time, and we find ourselves in 8th place, 100nm from the
finish off NYC. Winds topped at 25kts, surfing along with the heavy kite
under a full moon. Of course, many an hour we had the windseeker up, happy
to be doing 0.8kts. The Clipper Yachts will be on display in North Cove
Marina of Lower Manhatten, 4-6 June, departing 6 June for the 800nm run to
