LIFE AFTER VELUX By Brad Van Liew Life on land following my finish of the Velux 5 Oceans solo race around the world has been hectic. It seems weird to say that after everything I faced offshore for the last 8 months and 30,000 miles! I am not faced with 40-plus knots of wind or fierce competitors trying to hunt me down to take the lead. However, the transition to life on land and the reality that this race is over presents new challenges. Crossing the finish line was a relief and the entire fleet was treated to the warm hospitality of La Rochelle, France, and their enthusiasm for sailing. When I was approaching the dock and hoisted all the flags I had onboard, it was a proud moment to see the victory flags from each ocean sprint of the race. The official prize ceremony was emotional. It was great to have everyone together, which included not only the racers, but each competitor's shore crew, race organizers, media team, family, friends and sponsors. We have become a family over the course of the race, sharing time in each port and the ups and downs of joyous arrivals and intense goodbyes. It is strange to now say our final goodbyes and see each person head in a new direction. I had the very odd experience this morning of waving off my race boat, Le Pingouin, as she left La Rochelle Harbor without me onboard. My good friend and project manager Jeffrey Wargo was at the helm, along with two other competent sailors who will sail across the Atlantic to South Carolina. -- Read more: http://tinyurl.com/3vzao35 DAY 4 SKANDIA SAIL FOR GOLD Weymouth, U.K. (June 9, 2011) - Today was the traditional "moving day" for US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics on day four of Skandia Sail for Gold. As the saying goes, you either move up in the overall standings and increase your chances to get into the top-10 group who advances to Saturday's medal race, or you don't. With calmer seas and steady wind, athletes gained points in Women's 470, Star, 2.4mR, 49er, Men's RS:X and Women's Match Racing. Bob Willis (Chicago, Ill.) took two wins in the Men's RS:X silver fleet, his best performance at an ISAF Sailing World Cup event. Sitting in first overall Willis stated, "It felt really good in 15-20 and I've been training in these types of conditions with really fast guys. I was really disappointed when I didn't make Gold fleet, the best way to justify that is to make a statement in the silver fleet." Erik Storck (Huntington, N.Y.) and Trevor Moore (Naples, Fla./North Pomfret, Vt.) were back on form in the 49er today. They scored a win in the day's first race and then went on to score 13-13-14. They stand in 14th overall and in the hunt for the medal race cutoff tomorrow. With a 6th, a first and another 6th, Mark LeBlanc (New Orleans, La.) moved up the 2.4mR standings to 5th overall. The victory put Williams safely into third place just one point behind joint leaders Mathieu Richard (FRA) French Match Racing Team and Francesco Bruni (ITA) Bruni Racing. Four times match racing world champion Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing led off the line, managing to stave off the attacks from Williams (GBR) Team GAC Pindar as the two went head to head in what turned out to be the race of the day. Williams picked up a penalty during a luffing match rounding mark two when he didn't keep clear having been given plenty of room but edged past Gilmour, extending his lead to 27 seconds by the penultimate mark. Williams waited until the very last moment to offload his penalty on the finishing line, tangling with Gilmour just metres from the finish line. Williams finished his penalty on starboard, having opted not to take it around the mark itself, but Gilmour was owed room at the finish mark. Calls that Williams had caused contact flew from Gilmour's camp but their protest was dismissed by the on-the-water umpires and Williams snuck across the line to take the win. Prize money is awarded for each event, with event points culminating in the crowning of the "ISAF Match Racing World Champion". US SAILING PUBLISHES FOUR NEW APPEALS The US SAILING Appeals Committee has published four new appeals in 2011 that will be useful to racing competitors and officials. These appeals have been added to the on-line edition of The Appeals Book 2009-2012, available on the US SAILING Appeals Committee Web site. PDF's of each appeal can also be read and downloaded at that site. Appeal 103 describes a situation where the sailing instructions did not state whether marks were "rounding" marks or not; and makes the point that in that case competitors do not need to round each mark as long as they pass the marks on the required side. Appeal 104 involves a situation where a boat's PHRF rating was changed after a race was completed and the race committee retroactively rescored the race using the boat's new rating. The decision states that the race committee does not have the authority to do that, and reinstated the boat to its original finishing place. Appeal 105 is an interpretation of the definition Mark-Room; and specifically describes the amount of room to which an inside boat is entitled when sailing "to" the mark, and while she is "at" the mark. It also discusses how to determine when a boat has arrived "at" the mark. New, Appeal 106 is also an interpretation of the definition Mark-Room; and specifically addresses the question: when is a boat no longer "at" the mark? After this point, an inside keep-clear boat is no longer entitled to sail her proper course, nor will she be exonerated for breaking a rule of Part 2, Section A. -- View at: http://raceadmin.ussailing.org/Appeals.htm MOVING ON UP: FROM YOUTH TO SENIOR SAILING (June 9, 2011) - US SAILING's Team Alphagraphics squad member Erika Reineke has been sailing full time with the senior squad since January 2011 after making the jump up from youth sailing. The American won a bronze medal at the 2010 Volvo ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey before winning gold at Laser Radial Youth Worlds shorltly after in Largs, Scotland. And as a 17 year old still eligible to sail at the 2011 ISAF Youth Worlds in Zadar, Croatia, she has high hopes. "I plan to bring home the gold medal for the United States," Reinke said. "Last year I brought home the bronze and this time I want to go all the way." The step up from youth to senior sailing is a big jump for any individual, but the ISAF Youth Worlds provides a solid platform for young sailors to gain first-hand experience of a large sailing regatta. Reineke said, "The ISAF Youth Worlds taught me that consistency is rewarded in the end. The first day of the regatta brought out some of the finest conditions that could be expected for early summer, with clear skies and wind in the mid teens greeting the fleet. Mirsky, a regular on the World Match Racing Series, is 5th in the ISAF world ranking (2nd in 2010). Also announced by Venezia Challenge, 37-year old Ganga Bruni will be Team Coach. From Palermo, Italy, Bruni was a member of the Italian Olympic team in Sydney 2000, strategist in +39 America's Cup Team and Azzurra Team. The trip took Danforth 87 hrs and 33 minutes. The fleet of monohulls roared out of Narragansett Bay Friday morning (June 3) on an outgoing tide and a northwest breeze of 20 to 25 knots. The double-handed return from St. Georges to Newport will start Thursday, June 16. -- Event website: http://www.bermuda1-2.org/ * On 20th June British Adventurer and Blue Ambassador Dave Cornthwaite (31), will begin a 2,400 Blue mile journey from source to sea along the Mississippi River, by Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP). Only some copper bottom paints are designed to slough off. Others are designed to stay on the boat (hard coat), but provide an undesirable surface for marine growth. No copper gets into the water with these paints. They therefore present less hazards than "approved" ablating paints with other toxins. * From Paul P. Nardone Jr., Elmont, NY: May be there is so much copper in San Diego is the fact the Navy has many ships there. Oh and by the way the legislation doesn't include commercial or military vessels, and do the legislators that are voting for the bill have boats that need to stay in the water? Sounds like a little grandstanding for "green" that won't affect their lives at all. Some of us are already paying through the nose for paints that are so ineffective that we have to have someone dive and clean our hulls two or three times a month !!! * From Jack Clayton, Virginia Beach, VA: As a former NOAA cartographer and current boater in the Chesapeake, I take issue with both Mark Eustis (Scuttlebutt 3358) and Skip Allen (Scuttlebutt 3357). NOAA is the only gov't cartographer that legally stands behind their charts. All depths are indicated as "least representative depth." In an area of debris or rocky boulders, the shallowest feature is carefully picked out and placed on the chart. But it's important to note that Donnybrook grounded on a man-made feature, a tunnel entrance island of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The chart clearly indicates that the area around the island contains rip-rap that can shift and mariners are advised to keep clear (it's not a dumping ground). Despite the danger, I've known quite a few racers that have cut too close, either to cut distance or avoid current, and suffered significant damage as a result.
