FALSE START AT CANADA'S CUP Holland, MI (September 1, 2011) - The first day of the highly anticipated Canada's Cup international match race sailing competition was delayed on Lake Michigan due to lack of wind. Team Heritage of Macatawa Bay Yacht Club of Holland, MI is defending the Cup against Team Vincere, representing the Royal Canadian Yacht Club of Toronto, Canada. Heritage defeated Team Convexity of the Chicago Match Race Center last weekend in the Defender's series by a final result of five wins and one loss. Canada's Cup racing rules require a steady wind in a consistent direction with a minimum wind speed of 5-6 knots to initiate the pre-race sequence. When a late afternoon breeze failed to materialize, the Race Committee postponed racing until tomorrow when winds are forecast to be strong. The winner of the Canada's Cup is the first team to win five races. Racing continues through Sunday if needed. When the 36 teams of all-women sailors - who hail from 16 U.S. states, Canada, Great Britain and The Netherlands - left Rochester Yacht Club this morning, there were eight races on the scoreboard and a very tight point spread among the top-three in the standings. First overall was skipper Anna Tunnicliffe, the defending champion, followed by Sally Barkow, equal on points at 24. Just five points back was local favorite Cory Sertl, while Carol Cronin and JoAnn Fisher rounded out the top-five tied on 38 points. The goal was to complete an 11 race series, which meant there were three races on the day's schedule. After Tunnicliffe posted an 18th in the tenth race, the focus turned to Barkow and Sertl who were now tied with a six point margin on Tunnicliffe. With only 30 minutes left before the 3:00 pm deadline, the 11th and final race of the day began in 10-11 knots of breeze from the east. But the race would conclude with a protest between the two leaders. While Barkow won the race, she lost the protest, which awarded Sertl the title. Sertl has won this title twice previously: as crew for Betsy Alison at the first running of this event in 1985 at Ida Lewis Yacht Club in Newport, R.I.; and as skipper in 2001 when the event was held at Annapolis Yacht Club in Maryland. A two-time Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year, Sertl has competed in the Rolex IWKC 11 out of the 14 times is has been held over the 26 years since its inception. Click here for complete details: http://bit.ly/LaborDaySavings QUALIFYING NEAR COMPLETE St. Moritz, Switzerland (September 1, 2011) - Ian Williams (GBR) took one step closer to qualifying directly for the semi-finals of the 2011 St. Moritz Match Race today after dispatching his joint overnight leader Johnie Bertnsson (SWE) in a tie-break match in the second Qualifying Session on Lake St. Moritz. Williams' Team GAC Pindar has now secured seven wins and sits above a group of teams in a tense battle for the seven quarter-final spots. With both Team GAC Pindar and Berntsson Sailing Team on six wins and one loss, their match in flight 17 could prove crucial in deciding who qualifies directly for the semi-finals. Both Williams and Berntsson wanted the favoured left however Berntsson was forced to tack just after the start and was forced right. As has been the case all week, Williams found more pressure on the left and built an unassailable lead. Williams was clear in the build-up to the event that he was focused on winning Qualifying: "The win against Johnie was a really big one for us", commented Williams. "We'd seen that Johnie had been sailing really well so it was an important one for us to win to help achieve our aim to win Qualifying. We do have a habit of losing to teams that don't do so well, as we showed today, so that's something we need to work on for tomorrow." Williams' lone loss was against last placed Swiss Jerome Clerc. Charlie Ogletree (USA) is China Team's Skipper. Charlie has been with China Team since its start, in the role of tactician, and will now take on the lead as Team Captain/Skipper. Charlie is a legend in the world of multihull sailing, as an Olympic medalist (2004), World Champion, as well as numerous #1 rankings worldwide and in the US. He was runner-up Rolex Yachtsman of the Year in Olympic Racing (2005), and holds many other world titles as well. Newly joining China Team is Andreas Hagara (AUT), who will take on the role of helmsman. Charlie and Andreas have a long history of working together and Andreas brings with him his extensive multihull proven skills, as a World Champion, European Champion and World Champion bronze medalist as recently as 2010. These changes follow the team's announcement after the inaugural ACWS event in Cascais that they had decided to part ways with its skipper Mitch Booth. But on top of all the dangers associated with such a trip, including sleep deprivation, stormy seas and the threat of pirates, the 62-year-old American has an additional challenge to face. Howard is legally blind. "There's no question in my mind that I can do this," he said. "There is also no question in my mind that I absolutely have to take it seriously 24/7, I need to be vigilant." After suffering a severe form of glaucoma, which causes damage to the optic nerves, Howard had his right eye removed and lost most of the vision in his left. "My doctor estimates around 5% of my vision remains," he said. "To see what I see you can cover your right eye and then look through a drinking straw with the other -- that's what I see. "I can read a license plate from across the road, I just can't see the car," he continued. He plans to depart on his specially designed 20-foot (6.1 meter) boat the "Avalo" from San Diego, California, in late October. Using a Go-Pro camera attached to their alternate skipper's head (and then to the end of their 20 ft boom for the last shot), skipper Lance Fraser's team on Elizabeth II managed to capture the inside of a fitted dinghy race and some of the quirks of racing them. The 14 ft wooden boats have fixed keels, wooden spars (this was their second biggest rig of 39 ft) and as many crew as they want. This video shows the starts (hauling off of a tugboat), the lack of starboard/port rules (both boats hail each other and tack away), the fact that you don't have to finish the racing with anything you started (throwing the spinnaker pole off after the downwind) and even the bagpipes upon finishing. I am from Australia not NEW ZEALAND. I would like to add to what Gary Lovejoy has said, in so far that one of the main focuses of the coverage of the World Series events is to attract new audience to sailing. Getting the right balance between explaining sailing terminology without losing those who have intimate sailing knowledge, is the challenge and that is what we are striving to achieve. Even though we have two different TV feeds (sport feed - General Audience and also to the sailing feed - Higher level for sailing enthusiasts), There will be an ever increasing stream of new audience to both over the next few years leading into the Cup in 2013. Never before has sailing had an opportunity like this, to present our sport in a truly exciting and visual way. As I have explained to people, we will be taking the audiences along this journey, increasing their knowledge of sailing and in particular giving them the onboard experience, sharing all the adrenalin and drama associated with the crews going about their work under the stress of top level competition. How many other sports have the players Mic' ed up? This is great for our sport, and it will only get better. * From Theo Muller, Wellington, New Zealand: Commentators of the America's Cup Series in Cascais, including our own Peter Montgomery, were totally over the top. At times they were screaming at the top of their voice, which was most annoying and did not add anything to the excitement of the races. Commentators may well have been instructed to liven things up, but this was horrible. Please tone it down for Plymouth and future regattas. * From Scott Truesdell: Regarding the AC World Series coverage of Cascais, it was about half way through the regatta they offered a choice of audio streams. I forget the exact wording, but it was something like "audio for general audience" and "audio for racers". I think that most readers of Scuttlebutt would enjoy the "racer" commentary MUCH better. The MedCup commentators also struggle with these issues. * From Byron Glover: I sincerely appreciate Scuttlebutt. I began racing Sunfish, Fireballs and Snipe in the mid 60's. I raced J-24's in the 80's & 90's. I enjoy keeping up with today's racing scene through Scuttlebutt. However, I do have one observation. It seems to me that you rarely give the type of boat being used in regattas such as the Rolex or Match Race. I find this very frustrating. Maybe the type of boat is listed and I just got hit by the boom too many times. If that's the case - sorry to bother you. LABOR DAY In the United States, the first Monday in September is deemed Labor Day, one of the eleven recognized federal holidays in the country. With many public schools beginning classes after the weekend, it is also celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. Hopefully, at the very least, it will represent a restful weekend for the Scuttlebutt community. Taking advantage of the holiday weekend, Scuttlebutt HQ will not be publishing the Monday edition, but will return to our normal schedule on Tuesday, September 6th.
