USSTAG'S SZABO/STRUBE GRAB 3RD IN RACE 3 AT STAR EUROPEANS
Viareggio, Italy (June 9, 2010) - USSTAG's George Szabo and Mark Strube were
the top North American finishers in the third race today at the 2010 Star
European Championship in Viareggio, Italy. During the first leg, the wind
was blowing 12-13 knots, but it then decreased to 6-8 knots for the rest of
the race. Today's course consisted of five legs of two-mile beats.

After three long races, three USSTAG teams have moved into the top six of a
deep, 132-boat fleet: George Szabo/Mark Strube (fourth), Andrew
Campbell/Brad Nichol (fifth) and Mark Mendelblatt/ John von Schwarz (sixth).
USA's Rick Merriman and Austin Sperry sit in ninth.
The largest Star regatta to date, the Star European Championship runs
through Sunday, with one race scheduled per day.

"The strength of the top teams is the ability to continue to move forward
from their weather mark positions," observed Coach Mark Ivey. "The U.S. team
has done just that in the last two races and achieved keeper races. Today,
each U.S. team moved up significantly and all four teams finished in the top
15. We are now only half way through and with 130 boats and light sea
breezes forecasted, the advice is to not think about overall scores but to
get to the top mark inside top 20 and know it is a very long race track with
lots of opportunity."

Race report from George Szabo:
"You'd think that after sailing in several large fleets this year, we would
be used to it by now, but it is still taking a while to get used to 130
boats on a starting line. The start is critical, and speed is king in the
long races (one per day). We were fortunate today to get off the line well
and head for the favored side on the first beat. -- Read on:

LIGHT CONDITIONS FOR DAY 1 2010 ETCHELLS NORTH AMERICANS
San Diego, CA (June 9, 2010) - San Diego welcomed 42 Etchells teams with
cloudy skies and cool temperatures, not quite hitting double digits for
breeze on day 1 of 4, of the 2010 Etchells North American Championship. With
two races scheduled per day, the regatta is on schedule.

Race 1 saw a fairly steady breeze of 6-9 kts from the South-Southwest. The
5.9 mile race finished downwind with Andrew Whittome and crew Paul Terhaar
taking a first place in just under an hour and 30 minutes.

In Race 2, (7.7 miles), Newport Harbor Yacht Club sailor Argyle Campbell
with his crew Jamie Hardenbergh and Bill Mais took a decent lead over the
fleet, putting them in the lead with a 3 point cushion, after taking a 10
and a 1 for the day. Consistency pays off for current 2nd place holder Bruce
Burton and crew Glenn Burton and Jon Easley of Bayview Yacht Club with a 5
and 9 finish. With only 2 points separating places 2-4, the regatta is off
to a great and competitive start!

WORLD MATCH RACING TOUR UNDERWAY IN KOREA
Gyeonggi, South Korea (June 9, 2010) - Racing started after the formalities

Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing.

GunWoo, wildcard entry to Korea Match Cup, has racing experience in dinghy
fleets but only started the match racing discipline in November 2009. This
28-year old helm has fantastic potential and is a face that the seasoned

IOC ANNOUNCES ATHLETE ROLE MODELS FOR YOUTH OLYMPICS
(June 9, 2010) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced the
list of Singapore 2010 Athlete Role Models (ARMs) for the inaugural Youth
Olympic Games from 14 to 26 August in Singapore. The list features many
legendary names from the world of sport. The role models were appointed by
the International Federations taking part in the Youth Olympic Games and by
the IOC Athletes' Commission.

The Athlete Role Models will be in Singapore to mentor the 3,600 young
athletes who are expected to attend the Youth Olympic Games. Among other
activities, the ARMs will spend time with the athletes and will participate
in activities during the Culture and Education Programme, which will focus
on five themes: Olympism and Olympic values, skill development, well-being
and healthy lifestyles, social responsibility and expression through digital
media.

Athletes at the Youth Olympic Games will be encouraged to engage in
conversation with the ARMs, who will attend the competitions, visit the
Youth Olympic Village and feature in "Chat with Champions" forums designed
to inspire and educate the participants with personal accounts of their own
dreams and experiences, and the challenges they have overcome.

The ARM representing Sailing is the legendary windsurfer Michael Gebhardt of
the USA. Gebhardt was a bronze medallist at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul
and a silver medallist in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona in the Lechner
Sailboard. He competed at numerous World Championship regattas and major
international regattas in the Mistral Sailboard throughout the nineties and
finished 11th at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. For the last three years
Michael has competed in the RS:X class and is also a highly competitive
athlete on the International Kiteboarding circuit. -- Read on:

PAUL CAYARD ON THE RC 44 COPENHAGEN CUP
(June 9, 2010) - After nine matches and eight victories, Cameron Appleton
and his crewmembers on board Team Aqua have won the RC 44 Copenhagen Cup
match race in style. BMW ORACLE Racing, helmed by Larry Ellison, finished
second whilst Artemis, helmed by Terry Hutchinson, completed the podium.
Tomorrow will be a practice day for the fleet regatta, due to start on
Friday. While good for some, the regatta's not been so rosy for Paul Cayard
helming Katusha. From his blog, Cayard writes:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
"Well, that makes two of the worst days of sailing in my career. Today, we
did not do much better than yesterday, despite fully debriefing yesterday
and really focusing on what we were doing. We did manage to win the friendly
rivalry match we have with Cereef today, where the skipper is Rod Davis. Rod
is a long time friend of mine and there is always a case of beer on the
line.

In the others, we seemed to be a bit slow but after winning against Cereef,
I think there was a lot more to the difference in pressure out there than
what it appeared. Because the conditions were quite light today, the boats
split farther apart so the wind speed differentials made the difference. In
the Artemis race, we were over the starting line early so we just gave that
one away right there. Somehow, we managed to stay out of the cellar thanks
to Puerto Calero.

Anyway, I am banking on the thought that this will be water under the bridge
shortly. As bad a day possible out here, it is still a great place to be. I
know a lot of people would trade places with me in a heartbeat so I am
grateful for the job I have even on a very tough day! -- Read on:

EBERT STILL HAS WIND IN HIS SAIL
(June 8, 2010) - It was a win for the aged. Twenty two years after winning
his last Shark 24 class world sailing championship, Tecumseh's Hal Ebert
became the oldest non-skip and second-oldest sailor overall to win a Shark
world title.

It's the fourth Shark world championship for Ebert, who accomplished the
feat just a month shy of his 67th birthday. Ebert, who had previously won
world titles in 1984, 1987, 1988, was the middleman on the three-man crew
that included skip Greg Cockburn (Toronto) and Peter Aker (Kingston), who
handled the foredeck.

"It's a very sweet one to win for a couple of reasons," said Ebert, who only
recently arrived back home after touring Italy for nearly three weeks
following the regatta. "One, its been 22 years since the last world
championship. Two, it was my fourth attempt at winning one in Europe. It's
very satisfying to be the oldest crew to ever win. I'm in the twilight of my
career and it had been a long time since my last world championship."

The trio upset two-time the defending world champions skipped by Ottawa's
Greg Foy at the world championships last month on Lake Constance,
Switzerland. The Ottawa-based trio had dominated the 24-foot sailing class
for much of the past two years. The contrast was a stark one between the top
two finishers. Ebert's crew had a combined age of 174 years (Cockburn 58,
Aker 50) while Foy's crew totalled only 60. -- Read more:

EIGHT BELLS
John Bledsoe Bonds - conscience of sailing, safety innovator and authority,
and former Executive Director of U.S. Sailing - died on board his boat,
Alliance, at Newport, R.I., on the night of June 8. He was 70. He and his
wife, Beth, lived in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

Born in Arkansas, John Bonds was initially infatuated with the sea and boats
while a student at Rice University. He became an officer in the U.S. Navy,
retiring with the rank of Captain in 1988 after a broad range of duties that
included command of an ammunition ship off Vietnam and serving as Deputy
Dean of the Center for Naval Warfare Studies at the Naval War College.
Sailing whenever and wherever he could, in 1981 he was qualified to be
appointed Director of Navy Sailing.

For all his interests, John Bonds was never not sailing. He was active in
race management and judging for many sailing organizations, including his
yacht clubs, among which were the Charleston Yacht Club, the Cruising Club
of America, the New York Yacht Club, and the Storm Trysail Club. Besides his
wife, Beth, John Bonds leaves a daughter, Margaret Podlich, Vice President
of Government Affairs at BoatUS, of Annapolis, Md.; a son, John B. Bonds
Jr., of San Francisco; and two grandchildren.

He will also be missed by the world of his friends and admirers, and by the
countless people who owe their sailing - in some cases even their lives - to
what John Bonds brought us. -- By John Rousmaniere, read full obituary:

SAILING SHORTS
* Tallinn, Estonia (June 9, 2010) - At the Laser Standard/Radial European
Championships 2010 on Wednesday, with 3 knots of shifty winds, starts were
postponed until the ost-wind built, and 50 minutes after the originally
scheduled time, the last two qualification races started. In Laser Standard,
Tom Slingsby of Australia maintained his leader position with a 7th place
and a 1st place. In Laser Radial, Tina Mihelic again outperformed her
competition, winning both races in her fleet and strengthening her leader
position once more. Canadian Lisa Ross sits in 18th, and American Paige
Railey is in 23rd. -- http://tinyurl.com/25fd68j

* (June 9, 2010) - The Clipper Cup fleet is making excellent progress
towards the finish line at Sydney, Cape Breton Island. With a little over
200 miles left to go, the first yachts are expected alongside at the Joan
Harriss Cruise Terminal in Sydney on Thursday evening. There's just 15 miles
separating the first six yachts and there's a possibility that the winds
could become lighter and more variable in the next 24 hours, which could
shake up the positions. -- Full story:

* Washington D.C. (June 8, 2010) - A second National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration WP-3D Orion aircraft was deployed to the Gulf today to build
on current air quality monitoring efforts near the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil
Spill. The NOAA plane conducted two flights over and around the spill site
to detect pollutants and their reaction products released into the
atmosphere by the oil, as well as the pollutants and smoke from controlled
burns. The flights will enable researchers to better understand the spill's
atmospheric effects. -- Read on: http://tinyurl.com/28lonsq

* From Bill Sandberg:
Thanks for your coverage of the second annual Robie Pierce One Design
Regatta. As we all know, first class regattas can't be run without the help
of first class sponsors. This year they were major sponsors Henineken USA
and Mercedes-Benz of Larchmont, with in-kind sponsors Vineyard Vines, Ben &
Jerry's, Nestle Waters, UK Halsey Sailmakers, North Sailmakers and Northeast
Oyster Company.

Last year I was the PRO, and this year I was lucky enough to be the able
bodied crew for my old friend and shipmate, Ted King. In the article, our
crew Jim (last name Scott) was mentioned. Jim is a young man of 27 who
suffers from some paralysis on his left side and brain damage. He had never
sailed a day in his life, and after we won the practice race, I suggested he
may want to quit, as it was all downhill from here. His mother told me
during the event that she had never seen her son smile so much since his
accident, and Jim said he has now gotten the sailing bug. Mission
accomplished for sailors with disabilities--a new sailor and sailing family
have been created.

It was a very special event.
