Scuttlebutt: Video of the Week

(September 1-5, 2008) Racing at the 2008 Paralympic Games will be September 8-13, and among the favorites is American Nick Scandone, who is teaming with Maureen McKinnon-Tucker. In 2002, Nick was diagnosed with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. As the disease progressed, Nick turned his attention toward disabled sailing, later winning the 2005 US Rolex Yachtsman of the Year award as a result of his dominance in the singlehanded 2.4mR class. Gradually losing strength as a result of the disease, he has turned his attention to the doublehanded SKUD 18, which will be used for the first time at these Games.
